SONG REVIEW CRITERIA

This platform is a NEZI MOMODU STAN platform. To be perfectly clear.

This is a long overdue write up of rap's next powerhouse: Nezi Momodu. When we first heard "N.E.Z.", we were BEGGING to write about the song. The lyricism, the bravada, the effervescence of this song was bubbling out of our email inbox. Some of DJ Show's live viewers have probably heard us say how much we wanted to be able to loudly rejoice in the brilliance that is Nezi Momodu, but with great patience comes great reward.

Last week, Nezi released "N.E.Z.", the highly anticipated single from The Wordplay Queen and immediately received much deserved celebration. The video, linked below, pays homage to Momodu's inspirations.

The flawless faced rapper dons glossed lips pursed to the iconic Missy Elliot-esque fish lens, and just as quickly, Nezi flashes across the screen in a splendorous floor-length royal blue fur coat. Jaw. Drop.

Let's get to the categories:

Bop: Yes.

Oh, you want more details?

This is a CERTIFIED, SNOOP DOGG APPROVED BOP. If Uncle Snoop reposts it in his story, it's legit. The first eight seconds of the song are going to draw you in. This ain't no kiddie rap. This is real. raw. rap. bars. The first WORD of her first verse ("Muthafuckahhh") will put you in a Debo chokehold. You're GOING to want to know what she says after that, and she WILL NOT disappoint. The verses are undeniably perfect. Her flow, her tone, her syntax, her cadence on the beat-- AND THE BEAT! All combined, make for a fun pre-spring song, but will certainly have year-round play, you can bet that.

AirPods Quality: Perfection. (I've actually listened to this song multiple ways, and my favorite is in my car). This song is mixed perfectly. Produced by Beat Busta, the nostalgia of the beat, and even how it's mixed, is really refined, especially in your AirPods. You are going to want to listen to this song at its highest level, and when you do, you won't have to worry about any distortion. This song is crystal clear.

Knock Value: The production on this song doesn't call for a stupendous amount of knock, however, there is no shortage of knock in this song. Because Nezi's lyrics are so solid, and so well-delivered, her voice is it's own beat; it adds to the knock value of the song. Where some songs rely on the beat drops or for the engineer to mold the beat to the artist, it is no mystery that Nezi is able to deliver her own jaw dropping verse transitions, without the assistance of the beat. The two knock separately, and compliment each other for a really dope song.

Misogyny Meter: LET YOU GIVE ME BRAIN IN THE BLACK JAGUAR! Rap music is big on whose mouth is on who. Usually, women are the objects in the scenario, all gaping mouths for rappers in white tees. We love a rap queen reminding men that they, too, can be of service. This song is for the whole crew. We can pull up to this song like a fireside chat and bump this 100x before the sun sets.

We are very excited and proud to see what is to come for Nezi Momodu. Plan-A Radio has been a fan for a long time now. Nezi was interviewed by Ink last year during the early pandemic Femcee Fridays on Instagram. Nezi Momodu is a star, naturally. You just heard that she was hot? Then, bitch, you late!

Hip hop heads, backpack rappers, boom bap beat aficionados: you’ll feel me on this one.

Bop: Kvng4way has a great rap voice. It is reminiscent of Beanie Siegel, but a little fresher. While previously, our “Bop” category has included some ass-shakery, this is a long drive vibe bop. It feels like our favorite 90s and 00s New York hip hop movies and music videos; cool blue filter, a street corner with forty niggas wearin timbs’ and Enyce hoodies. This is that feeling. The verses are so well delivered, it leaves you wanting to replay to find those lyrical easter eggs. Kvng4way has a great grasp of lyrical content, delivery, and rap appeal.

AirPods Quality: The mix on this song is a bit raw. It still sounds really good in the ‘Pods. The bass on this song can become entrancing, if you like that kind of vibe. If you’re into the backpack rap vibe, you’ll love the quality of this song. The vocals come in higher than the beat; it sounds like he’s right in your ear. You can hear the push behind his Ps, the hiss in his S’s, even the coy in his laugh between the first and second verse. The engineer did a great job of adding panning aspects of both the instrumentation AND the vocals without being overpowering or annoying. It is a brilliant touch from his production team. Kvng4way has great adlibs that are layered and textured and staggered, which sounds like a lot, but when you listen, it works really well.

Knock Value: this song knocks. Period. It’s a vibe that carries through the song. It’s consistent. It’s honest. He’s feels like his own choir. The song has a poetic build up. It feels like he recorded it in one take. And even if he didn’t, Kvng4way delivers in that raw, Method Man, aggressive tone that adds pressure to the climax of the song.

Misogyny Meter: You can play this song with the crew. The whole crew. I love that this song is uplifting everyone. Kings and Queens (NB Royalty included!), this song is a vibe for us all. We truly miss a lost of the camaraderie of hip hop when we exclude or belittle communities, and this song feels like we're ALL in the cypher, being uplifted in song.

The Truth is a great song. It’s raw and honest. It’s one of those songs. One of the songs you throw on that “chillin” playlist. If you love a good hip hop song that you can play around anybody, this is that song. It’s empowering and strong. In times when a lot of music is CAP, it’s refreshing to have a song that isn’t that; a song that remembers the craft of rap: rhythm and poetry. This song is a poem. It is a movement. If you need some truth, listen up: Kvng4way is delivering.

East Oakland rapper and producer, Milli Madik, is giving the hustlers and the independent women a new anthem to ride to with this one. “Gutta Lil Baby” is a fun and fresh song from Milli Madik’s 2020 project, Flight Plans 3, available on all streaming sites (linked below).

Bop:

This is a bop. I’ll make it real easy for you. If you like a catchy song you can throw on to get everybody in the room shaking some ass, this is the one. Even the hood niggas gon’ love this one. It is a short song at just under two minutes, but it is definitely a party starter. “Gutta Lil Baby” has a modern production with a fun throwback flow. Plus, the hook is undeniable. I repeat— the hook is undeniable. You’ll find that the hook is very catchy, especially if you like that Bay Area flow that keeps the authenticity of hip hop with the call-and-response feel. We all know how crucial it is to have an attractive hook that grabs listeners attention; something you find yourself repeating throughout the day.

AirPods Quality:

The production on this song is really great. Milli Madik mixes and masters all of his music on his own, which is a tremendous amount of work. That hard work shows in the way this song comes through your AirPods. At even its highest level, the audio doesn’t crack and the bass on Gutta Lil Baby is consistent, not obnoxious. The first three chords of the song are a subtle invite to the first beat drop which leads into a fun summertime feel. Even the panning of the keys in the background isn’t too overpowering or distracting. It’s that very precise production choice that sends the vibration through your ears and down back and makes your ass shake. It’s just science at this point.

Knock Value:

Milli Madik knows what he’s doing in the production area and “Gutta Lil Baby” is proof of that. Madik knows how to take the fullness of an instrument, and use it as bass; that’s a clever way to maintain the knock throughout the song without solely relying on 808s. Not to say there’s anything wrong with 808s, but those artistic choices are what make this song, and it’s knock value, undeniable.

Misogyny Meter:

Oh yea, the bitches gon love this one. Yep. This song is so fun. It’s a hype song to the independent woman who makes her own money, has a healthy sex drive, and hustles for her own shit. Milli Madik is enamored about this woman’s work/life balance and celebrates her by singing her praises and dropping off quality D. “Gutta Lil Baby” is a celebration of the entrepreneurial women; it is a love song. Milli Madik is taking time to appreciate the hard work that hustling women put in and we love an anthem celebrating women.

Overall, “Gutta Lil Baby” is a 5/5. It is even more reason to check out the rest of Milli Madik’s music on all streaming sites linked below. Make sure to follow Milli Madik on all social media: @millimadik
